Squid is a bold, temporary exhibition exploring the unique species of squid found in New Zealand waters. It’s located in the Lane Gallery -an unusually narrow space that also functions as a lift corridor. Designing for this area is always tough due to awkward walls, exposed ceiling fittings, and a jarring carpet.
To create a practical and engaging layout, we worked closely with the museum’s design team. Object cases were reused from a previous display and placed down the centre of the gallery to keep walkways clear. The museum supplied all graphics and labels.
The standout feature? A striking elevator wrap showing giant squid tentacles creeping through a half-open lift door. Wrapped in 3M IJ180mC with matte laminate, the effect is so convincing that it’s become the highlight of the space.
We also incorporated:
• Digitac Spray’n Up wallpaper for wall graphics, offering a flat, recyclable surface with subtle underwater texture
• UV-printed Snowbond panels, lit with concealed LED halo lighting in aluminium extrusions wrapped in translucent film
• Discreet MDF boxes that space the signs off the wall while hiding cabling and power
Even with the space’s limitations, this is one of the best-looking temporary exhibitions we’ve helped deliver. It draws attention, encourages curiosity, and keeps kids engaged.
