Time Walk Paihia: Ātea Nuku Signage

About This Project

Time Walk Paihia offers an app-driven self-guided tour. It shares stories about the Church Missionary Society (CMS) and mana whenua in Paihia. Visitors learn about early Māori history and how different cultures worked together to shape modern Aotearoa.

The Challenge:

Method Digital created the digital content but needed durable signage to support their app. They wanted strong, subtle frames to hold removable A4 panels. These signs had to blend into historic surroundings and last outdoors.

Our Solution:

First, we built 13 freestanding QR code signs from 4mm mild steel. Each sign has a welded foot plate, is hot-dip galvanized, and coated with tough industrial paint. We painted the logo and added a clear coat for protection. The graphic panels use powder-coated aluminium with digitally printed vinyl. We attached them with anti-tamper screws to ensure security.

Next, for the lookout platform, we made 2 pole-mounted QR signs with folded steel mounts fixed to timber poles. These match the freestanding signs perfectly.

Finally, we designed 2 mission site information signs with larger aluminium post and panel systems. These feature removable ACM panels wrapped in vinyl graphics. Contractors concreted the spigots in the ground, and our frames fit securely over them.

All signs are securely installed and built to withstand weather and wear. This project successfully combines heritage storytelling with modern technology while respecting the historic setting.

This job was a FINALIST at the 2023 New Zealand Sign and Display Awards in the Signs category.
