Wai O Rua – The story of Ruaputahanga

About This Project

The new Wai O Rua Stratford Aquatic Centre needed a visual identity that reflected both its name and deep cultural roots. Local artist Wharehoka Smith joined us to bring this story to life through contemporary Māori design.

Project Overview

This project was unlike anything we’d been asked to tender on. The brief called for:

• A visual reference to the waiata Ruaputahanga, a tūpuna whose story gave Stratford its original name, Whakaahurangi — “to lift one’s gaze to the heavens.”

• Representation of key ideas such as recreation, wellness, learning, and competition, found both in the waiata and in the facility’s purpose.

• Māori artwork that would enhance the architecture, landscape, and public appeal.

• Knowing the depth and cultural nuance needed, we teamed up with Wharehoka. He led the storytelling and artistic direction, while we handled materials, methods, and installation.

Key Elements

1. Decorative Wall Panels

The original plan called for steel tukutuku panels. However, budget cuts meant we had to find a new approach. We photographed metal textures and digitally printed them onto cast vinyl, layering tukutuku patterns over the top. Most visitors—and even staff—don’t realise they’re not real metal.

2. Window Graphics

We applied Poutama and Ngā Whetū designs to the front windows. Using Hexis Cristal film, the graphics are subtle from outside but come alive in sunlight inside, casting vibrant blue reflections across the pool area.

3. Patterned Concrete

We designed and laid out the forecourt, which features a Patiki constellation design. Using vinyl masking and decorative concrete overlay, we created bold shapes in navy and bright blue. A protective coat with anti-slip glass bead finished the job.

4. Building Sign

The main logo is a 3M cad-cut vinyl decal applied directly to the cladding. It stands out clearly and is built to last.

5. Entrance Signage

For the roadside, we installed a Navigator pole system with printed ACM panels, giving the site a strong visual identity as visitors arrive.

This was a project full of purpose, challenge, and collaboration. The result not only enhances the space but also honours the story of Ruaputahanga in a bold and meaningful way.

This job was a FINALIST at the 2023 New Zealand Sign and Display Awards in the Shop Fronts category.
