The Brief
TSB Showplace asked us to design illuminated signage for their building. They wanted a large logo placed high on the building so it could be seen from a distance, and another sign on the verandah. The verandah signage needed to be freestanding with a sleek, brace-free design. The new logo also featured breaks in some of the letters (S, O, P, and C), which added a challenge.
Channel Letters on the Building
We created 700mm high channel letters using Foam PVC, aluminium, opal acrylic, and LEDs. We sprayed the letter sides white to match the acrylic face. This gave the letters a bold, 3D look during the day.
Verandah Sign Design
The 850mm letters for the verandah needed a different approach. We built the sign on a 16mm aluminium plate, which we mounted to the top of the verandah, out of sight from the street. Devon Street West often has strong winds, so we made sure the letters were solid and wouldn’t flex. To meet the clean design brief, we hid all bracing and framework inside the sign.
Each letter had a thick aluminium base fixed underneath the plate with countersunk screws. This setup also makes future maintenance simple. For stability, we flattened the base of the curved letters. By raising each letter slightly above the plate, we kept their original shape and preserved the logo’s style.
Clean, Custom Finish
To create the letter breaks, we added 4mm aluminium inserts into the faces. We sprayed the sides and backs black to contrast with the white fronts. This helped the structure fade into the building while the illuminated acrylic stood out, clearly representing the logo.
A Happy Client
The client loved the final result. They appreciated both the sharp look and the high build quality.
